Most HVAC pages will tell you a system lasts 12 to 18 years. That is true, and it is close to useless, because it tells you nothing about your house.
Trinity is not like the rest of Pasco. It was built in a compressed window, subdivision by subdivision, starting in the late 1980s when James Gills began developing the land around what is now Trinity College. The median Trinity home was built in 2003, which puts the typical house here at 23 years old and somewhere between its first and second system replacement.
Knowing which community you live in tells us roughly where your system sits in that cycle before we ever open the air handler. The table below is the actual build clock for Trinity.

| Community | Built | Where it sits in the HVAC cycle |
|---|---|---|
| Wyndtree | 1990 to 1995 | On its second or third system |
| Chelsea Place | 1992 to 1995 | Second or third |
| Trinity Oaks | 1992 to 2000 | Second or third |
| Villages of Fox Hollow | 1994 to 2004 | Second, or due now |
| Thousand Oaks | 1997 to 2019 | Depends heavily on phase |
| Fox Wood | 1998 to 2004 | Second replacement window |
| Heritage Springs | 1999 to 2006 | Largest cohort due right now |
| Champions Club | 2001 to 2021 | Depends on phase |
| Trinity West | 2003 to 2007 | First or second replacement |
| Trinity East | 2006 to 2014 | First replacement window |
| Trinity Preserve | 2014 to 2016 | Original system, warranty age |
| Villages of Trinity Lakes | 2015 to 2018 | Original system, warranty age |
If you live in Heritage Springs, Trinity West or Fox Wood, your system is very likely the one the builder installed or the one that replaced it, and it is at the age where the repair-or-replace conversation becomes real. If you are in Trinity Preserve or Trinity Lakes, you should still be under some form of warranty and you should not be paying out of pocket for major parts. If someone tells you otherwise, get a second opinion.
We will tell you which of those two situations you are in. That is what the $79 diagnostic buys.
Homes built in Trinity through the 1990s and early 2000s were commonly fitted with straight air conditioning plus electric strip heat for the handful of cold nights Pasco gets.
Strip heat works. It is also the most expensive way to heat a house that has ever been invented, because every hour it runs it pulls resistance-heating current at full rate. If your electric bill spikes in January and you have never understood why, this is usually the answer.
Replacing an older strip-heat setup with a high-efficiency heat pump is the single biggest efficiency upgrade available to a Trinity homeowner, and right now it is also the one Duke Energy pays the most for.
Start here: the federal 25C tax credit expired on December 31, 2025.
The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit applied to qualifying property placed in service before that date. There is no federal 25C credit for HVAC equipment installed in 2026. If a contractor quotes you a job this year and tells you a $2,000 federal heat pump credit will come back at tax time, they are working from stale marketing material. Ask them to show you the current IRS page.
Most of Trinity is served by Duke Energy Florida. A few addresses in the area fall under Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative instead, so check your bill before counting on any of the figures below.

|---|---|
| Heat pump replacing strip heat, 16.8 SEER / 9.0 HSPF (or 16 SEER2 / 7.5 HSPF2) | up to $1,000 |
| Heat pump replacing strip heat, 16.0 SEER / 9.0 HSPF (or 15.2 SEER2 / 7.5 HSPF2) | $600 |
| Heat pump replacement | $500 |
| Air conditioner replacement | $300 |
| Duct test and repair | up to $450, paid instantly |

Three things worth knowing that most people miss:
A free Home Energy Check is the gate. You cannot claim most of these without one. It comes in three forms: an online self-guided version, a phone assessment with an advisor, or a full in-person audit. Book it at duke-energy.com or 800.559.3853.
An emergency replacement still qualifies. If your system dies in August and you replace it immediately, you have 12 months after installation to complete the Home Energy Check and still receive the rebate. Nobody should lose a rebate because their compressor picked a bad week.
The work has to be done by a licensed, insured contractor. Ours is CAC1818179.
We will handle the rebate paperwork with you, and if the rebate still leaves a gap we offer financing. We are not going to pretend that is a heroic service. It is just something a contractor should do.
The nearest official weather station, Tampa International, records a 1991 to 2020 normal of 3,611 cooling degree days a year. Cooling is effectively the entire load here.
Your system almost never rests. A compressor here does the work a compressor in Georgia does in half the year. Twelve to eighteen years of service life is calendar time, not runtime, and runtime is what wears equipment out. That is why we recommend service twice a year in Trinity rather than once.
Humidity is a separate problem from temperature. An oversized system cools the air fast, shuts off, and never runs long enough to pull moisture out. The house hits 74 degrees and still feels clammy. That is not a refrigerant problem, and adding refrigerant will not fix it. It is a sizing and run-time problem, which is why we do a load calculation instead of matching whatever tonnage happened to be there before.
We work the whole of 34655, which is larger than Trinity itself and also takes in parts of Seven Springs and east New Port Richey. Worth knowing: the USPS preferred city name for 34655 is actually New Port Richey, with Trinity as an accepted alternate. If your mail says New Port Richey and you consider yourself Trinity, you are not wrong and we know exactly where you are.
Landmarks we run past daily: State Road 54 and Little Road, Mitchell Ranch Plaza, HCA Florida Trinity Hospital on SR-54, J.W. Mitchell High School, Fox Hollow Golf Club and Trinity College. Our shop is on Scheer Blvd in Hudson, straight up Little Road.

Real Google reviews of Mauro’s Air Conditioning & Heating, quoted as written. The full set is on our Google Business Profile.
I’m not one to write reviews but this one comes from the heart. I met Mauro about 12 years ago when he used to service my Mom’s AC. When I tell you that her AC had no business being operational, it’s not hyperbole. There’s no way it should’ve been working! What impressed me the most was that it wasn’t the AC he was taking care of. He was taking care of my Mom, who lived alone and had limited resources. The care, respect, honesty and integrity made an impact on me. He had one service vehicle at the time. Yesterday, once again, 2 team members serviced my 17 year old AC. The best way to judge a company is by interacting with its employees.

The diagnostic is $79 and it is published rather than quoted over the phone. What the repair costs after that depends entirely on what is wrong, and you get the number before we begin. A capacitor is not a compressor and we are not going to blur the two.
Twice a year in Trinity, not once. Tampa averages 3,611 cooling degree days a year, so a system here runs close to year-round. Service life is measured in calendar years but equipment wears out on runtime, and runtime here is roughly double what it is up north.
Twelve to eighteen years is the honest range for Pasco County, and the low end of it is more common here than the high end because of how much the system runs. The median Trinity home was built in 2003, so most houses in the area are on their second system and a good number are overdue for their third.
Three numbers decide it: what is failing, what the repair costs, and what a replacement costs after the Duke Energy rebate. We give you all three and you choose. As a rough rule, if the system is past 15 years, the repair is over a third of replacement cost, and it still uses R-22 refrigerant, replacement usually wins. Under 10 years with a single failed part, repair almost always wins.
In Trinity the most common cause is electric strip heat. Homes built here through the 1990s and early 2000s were commonly fitted with straight AC plus resistance strip heat, which draws current at full rate every hour it runs. A failing capacitor, a dirty coil, a refrigerant leak or a duct leak will also drive the bill up, which is what the diagnostic is for.
Yes, and in this climate the effect is larger than most people expect. A dirty coil, a clogged filter and low refrigerant all make the compressor run longer to hit the same temperature, and longer runtime is the whole electric bill. Duke Energy also pays up to $450 instantly for duct testing and repair, which is often where the loss actually is.
Check the thermostat batteries and the breaker first, then look at the filter. If those are fine, shut the system off rather than letting it run, because a frozen coil or a failing compressor gets worse the longer it runs. Then call us at (727) 378-5727. Most Trinity calls are same-day.
Yes, 24/7. Our office hours are 7:30am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday, and we are closed Saturday and Sunday, but emergency service runs around the clock. We will tell you the after-hours rate before we dispatch so there are no surprises afterward.
No. The 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit applied to equipment placed in service before December 31, 2025 and it expired on that date. Utility rebates through Duke Energy are the live incentive now, and for a strip-heat-to-heat-pump conversion they reach $1,000. If anyone quotes you a $2,000 federal credit in 2026, ask to see the current IRS page.
Up to $1,000 for a heat pump replacing electric strip heat at 16.8 SEER and 9.0 HSPF, $600 at 16.0 SEER, $500 for a heat pump replacement, $300 for an AC replacement, and up to $450 instantly for duct test and repair. A free Home Energy Check is required first, and if you replaced in an emergency you have 12 months after installation to complete it and still get paid. A few Trinity addresses are on Withlacoochee River Electric instead of Duke, so check your bill.
Usually oversizing. A system too large for the house satisfies the thermostat quickly and shuts off before it has run long enough to pull moisture out of the air, so the house hits 74 degrees and still feels clammy. Adding refrigerant will not fix it. It is a common outcome when a replacement was sized by matching the old unit instead of running a load calculation.
Free estimates apply to new system installations and replacements. Repair diagnostics are $79
